AFC U9 Girls SuperCopa 2017

Congratulations to our U9 Girls who were invited to the Premier SuperCopa 2017 tournament held in Rockford, IL from June 8-11.  The girls performed well all weekend long and finished the tournament as Finalists. The Premier SuperCopa is an invitation only event attended by the best teams from all over the country.  Qualifying teams are identified through the tournaments scouting process ad their seasonal performance. This was quite an experience for the girls.

Several families left early to participate in a one day camp ran by former US Women’s National Team players Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, and Tisha Venturini.

The night before the event,  the girls and coaches participated in the opening ceremonies, where they represented the club and Georgia proudly!

The next day was the girls first game.  However, this was a bit different for the girls as they were accustomed to playing on the finely cropped Bermuda grass that we have here in Georgia. In Rockford, the girls experienced the 2+ inch long fescue blend that is common in the midwest.  The girls handled their opponent from Nevada and the "field conditions" well.

After being all over Nevada team like a cheap suit, they came up short.  However, the coaches knew exactly what to do for the girls … BOWLING!

On the 2nd day, the girls were ready to rock and they played like it!  They came out in the morning and tied a team from Oklahoma and later in the day beat a team from Illinois.  This placed the girls in the quarter finals against a very good team from Ohio.  The coaches once again knew how to handle the moment …  thunder-ball, pizza and an old school hotel party (let’s be real, this actually may have been to make the night easier for the parents).

The 3rd day marked the start of the quarter-finals.  Having a game at 3:00pm meant the coaches has to be creative with how the girls were preparing their bodies and making sure there are no soft tissue injuries or strains.  Static stretching is just too boring, but the coaches knew exactly what to do.

(We have heard reports that Coach Brian participated as well.  If any members our paparazzi and momma-ratzi have evidence, please share with us).

Day 4, was a day of opportunity and retribution.  The semifinals today was a replay of the game against Nevada.  A double overtime thriller that girls walked away from with their heads held high as they advanced to the finals!

In the finals, it was a tale of two halves.  Their opponent won the first half, while the girls won the second half.  Unfortunately, the second half efforts were not enough to overcome the first half deficit.  After 5 games against some some of the best competition in the nation and reaching the finals is one heck of an accomplishment!

From Coach Brian, “Overall, the girls did really well. They adjusted to conditions, playing styles, and weather conditions to play an outstanding tournament. They created opportunities, worked together, and made it happen. I'm very proud of these girls, at this age, to take in everything they did and excel at it”.

From Coach Adam, “As both a Coach and Parent, I couldn't be more proud of what our U9 Gold Girls accomplished this weekend in IL at the Premier SuperCopa.  They battled the best of the best in their age group from across the country, and played their hearts out to make it to the championship game. Each and every time they took the field, the girls gave it everything they had.

Though we ultimately didn't clutch the championship title, our girls definitely deserve to hold their heads high. This tournament was the proverbial cherry on top of an awesome season. I'm thankful to have shared this monumental experience with them and Coach Brian Rogers--as well as the other parents, who are like family now.   The girls not only played great soccer they also can brag about great experiences like meeting current pro players and past greats like Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, and Tisha Venturini.

I look forward to what U10 has in store, and watching our girls play great soccer for years to come”.

The journey did not end there though.  The following week, AFC Lightning alum and former US Men’s National Team member, Clint Mathis stopped by McCurry Park.  Executive Director, Steve Muccillo knew Clint was in town and made a phone call.  Clint was very gracious and said he would be honored to meet the girls.

As Clint was sharing words of wisdom, he took and moment for an autograph session as well.  Little did he know he was the recipient of an autograph.

It was a great week for the girls.  Finalists at a prestigious event, met up to four (4) US National Team members, played and prevailed against some of the best teams in the nation, danced with Coach Adam, played Twister against and with Coach Brian, and most importantly made some great memories with friends and family.  AFC Lightning is very proud of the girls and coaches and extremely grateful for such a wonderful group of parents!  Let’s do it all over gain next year.
